r/CryptoCurrency Moons (MOON) are ERC-20 tokens introduced by Reddit in May 2020 as part of its Community Points program. • Community Reputation: Users could display their MOON balance as a badge, showcasing their contributions and standing within the subreddit.

  • Exclusive Features: MOONs allowed access to special perks, such as custom badges and the ability to embed GIFs in comments, enhancing user experience.

  • Tipping and Transfers: Members could send MOONs to others within the subreddit, facilitating peer-to-peer appreciation and rewards.

  • Governance and Voting Power: Holding MOONs provided greater influence in subreddit polls and decisions, enabling decentralized community governance.

Initially, MOONs were launched on the Ethereum mainnet. To improve transaction efficiency and reduce costs, Reddit migrated MOONs to Arbitrum Nova, a Layer-2 scaling solution optimized for social applications.

In October 2023, Reddit announced the discontinuation of its blockchain-based Community Points program, citing scalability challenges and high costs as primary reasons. Despite efforts to integrate with scaling solutions like Arbitrum Nova, the platform faced difficulties in effectively scaling the rewards system for its extensive user base.
