MistCoin (MISTCOIN) is a historic Ethereum collectible and one of the first tokens deployed on the Ethereum blockchain shortly after its launch in 2015. It was created as a prototype to test the concept of standardised token creation, paving the way for the widely adopted ERC-20 token standard. MistCoin is available in its original form and as Wrapped MistCoin (WMC), which is an upgraded version enabling compatibility with modern ERC-20 functionality.
The token was deployed by Ethereum developers Fabian Vogelsteller and Alex Van de Sande, who were key contributors to the Mist team and the ERC-20 standard. MistCoin’s original contract supported only two basic functions—transfer and balanceOf. In 2022, a wrapper contract was introduced to enable additional ERC-20 functionality and facilitate trading on decentralised exchanges like Uniswap.
MistCoin’s primary significance lies in its role as a foundational experiment for standardised token creation on Ethereum. Its deployment in 2015 served as a proof of concept for what would later become the ERC-20 token standard, which is now a cornerstone of Ethereum's ecosystem. MistCoin demonstrated how tokens could be issued, transferred, and managed programmatically using smart contracts.
In July 2022, the introduction of Wrapped MistCoin (WMC) extended the token's functionality, allowing holders to trade the asset on decentralised exchanges and participate in the modern Ethereum token economy. Although its utility is largely historical and educational, MistCoin represents a milestone in the evolution of decentralised finance (DeFi) and tokenised assets.
MistCoin was created by Ethereum developers Fabian Vogelsteller and Alex Van de Sande, both key contributors to the Mist team and early members of the Ethereum Foundation. Fabian Vogelsteller is also the creator of the ERC-20 token standard, and Alex Van de Sande led the Mist Browser project, which provided an early graphical interface for Ethereum users to interact with decentralised applications and tokens.
Although 'MC' was the ticker assigned at the deployment of the MistCoin's smart contract, it is in use by another asset that has a larger market presence and higher trading volume on major exchanges. Due to this association and to avoid confusion in the marketplace, the alternative ticker 'MISTCOIN' has been adopted for this token. This designation is specifically used to ensure that assets are distinctly identified.
