Guncoin

Guncoin (GUN) is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency originally launched on 1 May 2014. It was created to serve as a dedicated digital currency for the firearms and related industries, addressing a key issue in the sector: the difficulty of processing payments through traditional financial systems. Guncoin was designed to offer an alternative payment method for individuals and businesses who are often restricted or denied service by conventional processors due to the nature of their products.

Initially based on the Scrypt algorithm, Guncoin migrated to the Neoscrypt algorithm at block 120,000 in October 2014. Neoscrypt offers stronger cryptographic protections, increased memory-hardness, and ASIC resistance, helping to maintain decentralised mining access for users with standard GPU hardware. This shift aimed to protect the network against centralisation by industrial mining operations.

Guncoin uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism and integrates a second layer of Masternodes, following a model similar to Dash. These Masternodes are incentivised with 47.5% of the block reward for providing services like PrivateSend (enhanced transaction privacy) and InstantSend (faster transaction confirmation). The remaining 47.5% is allocated to miners, and 5% is directed to a development and charity fund.

The current block reward is 75 GUN, reducing at predefined block heights, with a total maximum supply capped at 500 million GUN. The average block time is 2 minutes. Guncoin uses DigiShield v3 for difficulty retargeting and supports features such as Automatic Checkpointing to mitigate 51% attacks, and enhanced Hash Rate Compensation (eHRC) to maintain mining stability.

Guncoin is intended primarily as a payment solution for the firearms industry. Its development was driven by the challenge of finding reliable and affordable payment processors for firearms and related goods, as many major services like PayPal, BitPay, and credit card companies restrict or prohibit such transactions.

By offering a decentralised, censorship-resistant method of payment, Guncoin aims to provide firearms retailers and individuals with a reliable alternative. Transactions are designed to be fast, with near-instant posting and full confirmation typically within minutes. Transaction fees are minimal or negligible, making it suitable for microtransactions.

Beyond direct payments, Guncoin also supports network participants through mining and Masternode operation. Masternode operators provide critical services and governance, and receive rewards for their contribution to the network. Businesses can also integrate Guncoin for online payments, with wallet support across Windows, macOS, Linux and web-based platforms.

Although 'GUN' was the ticker assigned at the deployment of the Guncoin Token's smart contract, it is also in use by another asset with a larger market presence and higher trading volume on major exchanges. To avoid confusion in the marketplace, the alternative ticker 'GUNCOIN' has been adopted for this token. This designation ensures that assets are distinctly identified.
