Discord Shutters Plans for Ethereum Integration After Community Backlash

After hinting at a possible Ethereum integration earlier in the week, Discord CEO Jason Citron now says the social network has “no current plans” to integrate crypto into its platform.

The Nov. 8 tweet previewed Metamask and WalletConnector integrations on Discord’s platform, which sparked outrage across its community over environmental concerns for Ethereum’s energy usage. It came in response to a newsletter written by entrepreneur Packy McCormick that looked at Discord’s potential in the Web 3 space.
Despite Discord’s popularity among crypto communities globally, many users took to Twitter and Reddit threatening to boycott the platform if crypto features were integrated.
According to gaming curator Ryan Brown, the tweet even spurred a wave of paid subscription cancellations and internal conflicts among Discord’s staff.
Citron ended his statement by saying, “Web 3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon.”
