SHAPE is the governance token of the Shape network, an Ethereum layer-2 built for NFT and creator activity.

At a conceptual level, SHAPE is the token used to coordinate decisions about the network. It sits at the protocol level rather than being tied to a single application, collection or service. Its role is to support governance of the Shape ecosystem and to act as the token through which network participants can take part in decisions about how the protocol develops over time.

Shape presents SHAPE as part of a broader network designed around creator participation, onchain cultural activity and progressive decentralisation. In that context, the token functions as the governance layer for the network rather than as a claim on the company associated with the project.

SHAPE is primarily used for protocol governance. According to Shape’s published materials, holders can use the token to participate in governance processes related to the network, including proposing, voting and delegating on protocol matters such as upgrades and parameter changes.

Shape also describes SHAPE as part of its longer-term decentralisation model. Its published documentation states that the token is intended to be used in staking-based systems connected to validator and sequencer participation, subject to governance decisions and implementation over time.

More broadly, SHAPE sits within a network intended to support creator-focused onchain activity. Shape’s documentation highlights features such as Gasback and developer tooling, including infrastructure for AI agents to access Shape-specific onchain data. These features do not change SHAPE’s core role, but they provide context for the ecosystem in which the token operates.
