Gavin Wood is a co-founder of Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, and former chief technology officer of the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organization guiding the cryptocurrency. More recently, he founded Parity Technologies and the Web3 Foundation.

Wood met fellow Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and helped develop the first functional implementation of the blockchain, PoC-1, which was released in January 2014. Wood is also credited with the invention of Solidity, the smart contract programming language used as the basis for Ethereum.

Wood departed from Ethereum in 2015 and co-founded Parity Technologies, a company dedicated to building open-source infrastructure on the Ethereum network. Parity has produced a free platform with tools including mining client software, a downloadable wallet, a framework for building blockchains and a testing environment for new decentralized apps (dapps).

Additionally, Wood is the president and founder of the Web3 Foundation, an initiative that advocates for a decentralized internet where users are in control of their data and identity. In 2019, Wood and the foundation created Polkadot, a project intended to connect blockchains and networks without the need for trust to enhance their security. An initial version of Polkadot launched in May 2020.
