The Shanghai-based university recently has been working closely with local governments to promote blockchain technology nationally. In 2021, SJTU partnered with Hainan province to establish Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Hainan) Blockchain Research Institute. Earlier this year, it worked with Wuxi, a city in eastern China, to build a new research institute.

The Blockchain Research Center is an interdisciplinary research center that includes faculty members from various disciplines such as information, machinery, finance, law, and mathematics. Its research topics cover blockchain architecture, blockchain system construction and common key technologies, and application demonstrations in key areas of blockchain. SJTU professor Xueming Si is chief scientist of the center; he is also director of the Blockchain Professional Committee of the Chinese Computer Society.

SJTU scholars have published 191 blockchain-related papers, more than from any other institution in mainland China.
