Harvard University has launched three blockchain initiatives including the Digital Finance Initiative, the HLS Blockchain & Fintech Initiative in both 2020 and 2021. Guest speakers have included Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler on “Future of FinTech” and Tim Massad, former chairman of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission and a research scholar at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, on “Digital Assets and Facebook’s Libra."
Students can take six courses, including the economics course Incentives in The Wild: From Tanking in Sports to Mining Cryptocurrencies, and the law course Designing a Central Bank Digital Currency for the United States. Student interest in blockchain and crypto has led to the formation of three clubs: the Harvard Blockchain Club, Harvard Bitcoin Club and Blockchain and Crypto Club.
Harvard University also has three online blockchain certificates, including an introduction to blockchain and Bitcoin.
