The flagship institution of the public University of Illinois system, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) offers two graduate-level blockchain degrees, a master's in financial engineering and a master of science in finance, with a fintech specialization. It also has 15 courses on blockchain, ranging from Principles of Blockchains, an engineering course, to Advanced Topics in Business Law.

UIUC has also hosted many events and conferences such as “Blockchain Summit: Empowering You to Manage Disruption” and “Leveraging Fintech.” Its blockchain research center, Decentralized Systems Lab, has a mission to build resilient public infrastructure for the world’s data. Its faculty director, assistant professor Andrew Miller, is also an associate director of I3C, the 10-university research center on crypto. UIUC scholars published 76 blockchain papers between 2019 and 2022, with 871 total citations.
Three student blockchain clubs, including the Cryptocurrency and Decentralized Finance Club, CryptoClub and Illini Blockchain, demonstrate UIUC student interest in the technology and its applications.
