CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Index (SMT)

The CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Index (SMT) is designed to measure the market capitalization weighted performance of smart contract platform protocols included in the Digital Asset Classification Standard (DACS). Inclusion of a digital asset in SMT is subject to minimum trading and exchange eligibility requirements.

The Index is based on DACS. To be eligible for the index, constituents of the index must be included in DACS and assigned to the Smart Contract Platform Sector. For more information on DACS, including sector definitions, please refer to the DACS page.

The CMI family of indices functions as a benchmark for digital asset allocation models that guide investor decisions on how much to invest in each asset class. It delivers institutional quality intelligence to investors who can use them to develop strategies against market fluctuations and capture untapped opportunities in the investable digital asset market.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) is an emerging financial technology utilizing the secure distributed ledgers of the blockchain.

What it does: DeFi circumvents the fees and barriers that traditional financial institutions implement for using their services, providing users self-sovereignty and direct access.

Why it matters: DeFi holds the potential to bring about an egalitarian financial system, as anyone with an internet connection can leverage DeFi services.

Use cases: DeFi platforms focus primarily on providing borrowing, lending, staking and exchange services, whereby participants can deposit funds as collateral via decentralized smart contracts. As such, one of the key aspects of DeFi is total value locked (TVL). TVL is the total value of all assets deposited, or staked, in a decentralized finance protocol that generate economic activity.
